I Chose OT…

after shadowing professionals working in occupational therapy, physical therapy, and speech therapy. I was drawn to occupational therapy because the treatment sessions were all tailored to working on each patient’s daily skills. OT included mental health components while also addressing the more physical, specific occupation in which the patient needed help. I observed that occupational therapy was a collaboration between the patient and the occupational therapist.

I also love that I can use my creative side to think of alternative solutions for challenges my patients experience.

My Impactful Experience Working in OT

I worked with a man who lost both arms due to electrical burns. Initially, we focused on wound care and preparing for prosthetics. We adapted his home, trained caregivers, and guided him in daily tasks. After receiving prosthetics, we retrained him in self-care, chores, and driving.

With progress, he regained independence and returned to work through vocational rehab. In our year and a half together, addressing physical, mental, and spiritual challenges made it my most impactful experience, employing every aspect of my occupational therapy skills for whole-person care.

My Favorite Occupation

Walking the beach with my husband and serving with Sleep in Heavenly Peace-West Orlando chapter where we build and deliver beds to children in need.

Occupational therapy practitioners are needed everywhere!
